Vintage motor tax and NCT rules for classic cars
Thirty years old gets you cheap tax and fewer tests. Forty gets you out of the NCT entirely, as long as the car stays private.
Vintage motor tax
Cars that are 30 years old or more qualify for a flat vintage motor tax rate of €56 a year, regardless of engine size. The threshold rolls forward every year, so cars from the mid-1990s are now joining. Check the current rate with your local motor tax office before you budget.
NCT
- Private cars 40 years old and over are exempt from the NCT, as long as they are not used commercially.
- Private cars aged 30 to 39 are tested every two years instead of every year, provided they have been kept in test and a non-commercial use declaration is signed at the test centre.
- Cars used commercially, for example for wedding hire, need a roadworthiness test whatever their age.
Every Mile Club listing shows what these rules mean for that car, based on its year.
Why sharing doesn't change this
Co-owners using their own car is private use, so a shared car keeps its exemptions. If the group started renting the car out, it would become commercial use and lose them. That is one more reason paid hire is against the rules.
