Ford Escort shares in Ireland
Rear-wheel-drive Escorts were the family car, the rally car and the boy racer's car in Ireland for a generation. Values have climbed hard, especially for Mexicos and RS models, and good ones rarely come up.

Why a Ford Escort works as a shared car
A genuine fast Escort is out of reach for most people on their own. Split four ways, a Mexico costs about the same as a share in an MGB, and the car keeps its value because nobody is thrashing it every weekend.
Which one to buy
The Mk1 has the curvy 'dog bone' grille; the Mk2 is squarer and roomier. Ghias and 1300 GTs are the affordable way in. Mexico, RS2000 and RS1800 carry most of the value.
What to check before you buy
- Is it real? Fast Escorts are often copies. Check the chassis plate, VIN stamping and history before you trust the badge.
- Front inner wings and suspension turrets, chassis legs, floors and the boot floor are rust traps.
- Rear spring hangers and the axle location, especially on cars that have been rallied.
- Kent and Pinto engines are tough, but listen for timing chain or belt noise and check for blue smoke.
- Ask for photos of any restoration. A fresh shell on a car with no history is worth less than an honest original.
Whatever the car, get an independent inspection before you pay for a share, and read what goes in a co-ownership agreement.

Ford Escort shares, answered
How much does a share in a Ford Escort cost?
It depends on the car and how many shares it's split into. As an example, a 1973 Escort Mexico worth €48,000 split 4 ways is about €12,000 a share, with running costs of around €120 a month each before fuel.
How do I know if an Escort Mexico or RS2000 is genuine?
Check the chassis plate and VIN against the factory records, look for the correct body type codes and ask for history going back decades. If in doubt, ask the relevant owners' club to look at it before you pay.
Are Escort parts easy to get in Ireland?
Yes. Body panels, engine parts and suspension are widely available, much of it remanufactured, because so many Escorts were rallied.
