Why a Mercedes W123 works as a shared car
A W123 is cheap to share and easy for anyone to drive. The estate is a great group car for festivals, surfing trips and moving a teenager to college.
Which one to buy
The 200D and 240D are the taxi favourites, the 230E is the sensible petrol, and the 280E is the quickest. The coupé (C123) and estate (S123) cost more.
What to check before you buy
- Wheel arches, jacking points, the front valance and under the bumper and trim strips.
- The bottom of the windscreen and rear screen, where water sits under the rubber.
- Vacuum central locking and the climate control, which are fiddly to fix.
- Diesels are almost unbreakable but slow. Petrol 230E and 280E cars are the better drive.
- Service history. These cars reward regular maintenance and punish neglect.
Whatever the car, get an independent inspection before you pay for a share, and read what goes in a co-ownership agreement.

Mercedes W123 shares, answered
How much does a share in a Mercedes W123 cost?
It depends on the car and how many shares it's split into. As an example, a 1984 230E worth €12,000 split 3 ways is about €4,000 a share, with running costs of around €88 a month each before fuel.
Is a W123 diesel a good classic?
As a dependable car, yes. As a driving experience, it's slow. If you want to enjoy the drive, choose a 230E or 280E.
Does a W123 qualify for vintage motor tax?
Yes. Every W123 is now more than 30 years old, so it can be taxed at the vintage rate once registered as a vintage vehicle.
