Why a VW camper works as a shared car
A camper gets used for a handful of summer weekends a year, so a four-way share fits the way people actually use them. Each co-owner gets about four long weekends a season.
Which one to buy
The T1 split-screen is the icon and the most expensive. The T2 bay window is easier to live with. Westfalia interiors are the most sought after.
What to check before you buy
- Cab floor, jacking points, sills, the front valance and the battery tray area.
- Rear wheel arches and the bottom of the sliding door.
- Engine type: the Type 1 is simple, the Type 4 (later 1.7 to 2.0) is stronger but dearer to fix.
- Interior condition and whether the pop-top, cooker and sink work and are safe.
- Many are left-hand-drive imports. Check the paperwork and what VRT was paid.
Whatever the car, get an independent inspection before you pay for a share, and read what goes in a co-ownership agreement.

VW camper shares, answered
How much does a share in a VW camper cost?
It depends on the car and how many shares it's split into. As an example, a 1974 T2 Westfalia worth €42,000 split 4 ways is about €10,500 a share, with running costs of around €117 a month each before fuel.
Can I sleep in a shared camper?
Yes, if it has a camping interior. Agree house rules on cleaning, bedding and gas bottles in your co-ownership agreement.
Do campers need a different licence?
No. Type 2 campers are under 3,500 kg, so a standard car licence covers them.
