Why a Land Rover works as a shared car
A Land Rover is a second car for most people, which makes it perfect to share. The 109 station wagon seats a family, and nobody minds sand on the floor.
Which one to buy
The 88 is the short wheelbase and the 109 is the long. The Series IIA (1961 to 1971) is the classic look; the Series III is easier to live with. Defenders from 1990 have the Tdi diesels most people want.
What to check before you buy
- The chassis, above all the rear crossmember and outriggers. A galvanised replacement chassis is a plus.
- Bulkhead footwells and the door pillars, which rust from the inside.
- Aluminium body panels don't rust but corrode where they touch steel. Look at the bottom of the doors.
- Swivel housings, steering play and the transfer box. Leaks are normal, puddles are not.
- Diesel Tdi Defenders are the easy long-distance choice. The 2.25 petrol Series cars are charming but slow.
Whatever the car, get an independent inspection before you pay for a share, and read what goes in a co-ownership agreement.

Land Rover shares, answered
How much does a share in a Land Rover cost?
It depends on the car and how many shares it's split into. As an example, a 1968 Series IIA 88 worth €22,000 split 4 ways is about €5,500 a share, with running costs of around €71 a month each before fuel.
Is a Land Rover expensive to insure?
Usually not, as a classic. Insurers like that they're driven gently. Modified off-road builds can cost more.
Do old Land Rovers need an NCT?
It depends on age, not type. Over 40 years old and in private use, no. Between 30 and 39 years, every two years.
